Hi! I’m KC. I’m a 30 year old biology teacher from Connecticut, and since I was a little kid, I’ve dreamed of building a homestead of my own.
My goal is to be semi self sufficient: I want to engage in the homesteading activities that I enjoy, while outsourcing those that cause stress. For me, this is all about the fun and satisfaction of working with my hands and creating comfort for myself.
I decided to chase this dream on my own because I know too well that life is too short to wait around for the ‘perfect time’ to do anything.
Both of my parents had grand dreams for their retirement years… and both of them were diagnosed with terminal cancer before they could enjoy them. I served as a caregiver for both of my parents, and losing them nearly destroyed me.
While I never thought I’d open my heart again, I’ve found incredible support from a wonderful couple who have become my chosen family. They own a 20-acre hobby farm where I spend most of my time, and as of late 2024, I am in the process of purchasing the 10-acre farm next door.
This blog is a chronicle of the process of starting a homestead from scratch. I’ve found the land – now I *just* have to finish the buying process, close the deal, move in, install solar panels, plant gardens, grow food, preserve food, build a wood shed, split firewood, acquire necessary equipment, build other necessary infrastructure… oh, I guess I have a lot to do!
A few other details that are important for the homestead I’m building:
- I am a biologist to the core, with a wide variety of biology-related interests. I’m obviously into gardening and love animals, but I also have some experience with foraging, and I’m a volunteer EMT!
- I am an avid equestrian. My horse lives at my family’s farm; her pasture will be visible out my front window!
- I am a vegetarian, so I won’t be participating in animal husbandry. That’s just a personal choice that makes sense for me. I may end up with chickens at some point.
As I navigate this journey, I will be posting updates to the blog with two goals:
- To allow others to learn from my mistakes and live vicariously through me, as I have from so many others.
- To solicit advice from those who have already navigated this part of the homestead building process.
Please don’t be shy about sharing any advice you have with me!
Thanks for being here. 🙂
